The World Responsible Tourism Awards are organised by founder responsibletravel.com and are principally sponsored by the Sultanate of Oman Ministry of Tourism. Other sponsors include Norway and British Columbia tourists boards. The judging process is designed and organised in partnership with the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) at Leeds Metropolitan University.
Each year, the Awards are hosted by World Travel Market during the World Responsible Tourism Day (06 November 2013). Prominent tourism organisations such as ABTA, ANTOR, the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, Our Land, The Tourism Society and PATA, as well as media partners including Metro and TTG, all also support the Awards.
This year the Awards are celebrating their 10th year anniversary. Since they were founded in 2004, the Awards have attracted over 10,000 nominations from members of the public, leading to over 200 unique organisations located in more than 50 countries, to receive awards for their achievements in making a real difference to responsible tourism practice.
This year, the World Responsible Tourism Awards are divided into 8 new categories, each one focusing on a unique and currently hotly debated topic of responsible tourism (e.g. water conservation, child protection). The Awards aim to promote and reward excellent practice from organisations conserving cultural heritage, preserving local environments, and contributing to the sustainable livelihoods of local people.
